Our Day out in Longford
19th Jan 2026
In November, we attended an exciting Science workshop in Longford Library. As part of the workshop, we got to work as crime scene investigators and learn about how data is collected and processed at scenes. It was a very practical and worthwhile workshop.
After our workshop, we had a snack and walked up town. We looked at the famine statue on Centenary Square. We found it very interesting because we pass by it all the time but never really took notice of what it was or the engraved message on it. It says "Some leave by choice, Some by necessity. All are missed. Always welcome home."
We then walked towards the court house, the army barracks. Ms. McCormack explained that the barracks had shut down some years ago but that there had been soldiers stationed there previously and it was a place of great history. She even went on her Junior Infant tour there!!
We walked onto the local garda station and then to the mall. We had a walk through the mall and got to play in that playground. It was great fun.
Our final stop was to St. Mel's Cathedral. We had recently learned about the devastating fire on Christmas morning in 2009. We looked at the beautiful photos inside the cathedral that showed the reconstruction process. Some of us had never been to the Cathedral. It was very interesting. We went inside and we were shocked at how beautiful it was. We looked at the different designs on the stained glass windows and at the organ. We took a group photo on the steps outside the Cathedral.
We then left and met our driver Damien to return back to school.
It was a great day!
